Trade deal threat to GMO ban Today's News - The Mercury - The Voice of Tasmania

Trade deal threat to GMO ban Today's News - The Mercury - The Voice of Tasmania: "THE push for a free trade area in the Asia-Pacific is behind steps to remove a ban on genetically modified crops in Tasmania, say the Greens.

Greens leader Christine Milne said yesterday that few people knew about the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement plan.

"It is supported by both parties and if it goes through [it] will open up Tasmania to be sued by giant international companies who want to push their GMOs [genetically modified organisms] here," Senator Milne said.

"The community has no idea about it and the direct impact it will have."

The agreement includes Australia, the US, Canada and eight other countries.

"We support the state's moratorium on the growing of genetically modified food crops," Senator Milne said."
