Don’t be fooled by ads against I-522 | Walla Walla Union-Bulletin:

It is absolutely true that farmers have been manipulating their crops for centuries in order to get the best yields from each seed planted.
However, to equate their efforts with what Monsanto and others are doing is wrong. GMO (genetic modified organism) technology allows for the incorporation of genes from one species into an unrelated species to gain an advantage.
In fact, what they are doing could not occur naturally in nature. Corporations are not only manipulating plant DNA, they are also modifying the genetics of animals in order to produce desirable traits for the farm market. And much of what they are doing is hidden by patent law. Even the testing that is done by the government is very limited in scope.
Understanding the basics of genetic engineering is important when making an informed decision about Initiative 522 because this initiative does not ban genetically engineered products. It will only require labeling for foods on grocery shelves.
GMO foods will continue, but labeling will allow consumer to decide if they want to purchase food created by the GMO process. Labeling puts the decision in the hands of consumers to buy or not buy. If consumers want to purchase food that has been genetically engineered, it will be their choice.
But why is so much money pouring into the anti-labeling campaign? How could more information be bad?
Corporations in this industry clearly understand that given a choice through labeling, consumers will not buy GMO products.
Do not be fooled by the “anti” advertisements, it is all about misleading the consumer.
