YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima Valley farmers and the groups that represent them have lined up against a state initiative that would require labels on all genetically altered foods.
What supporters of Initiative 522 call information, farmers consider a backhanded warning that would stigmatize their crops and drive up costs for them, shoppers and taxpayers.
“That’s going to be more paperwork for me every time,” said Ray Arreola, who has been growing mint, wheat and corn for more than 40 years near Wapato.
