Protesters rally in downtown Portland against GMOs in annual March against Monsanto | OregonLive.com

Protesters rally in downtown Portland against GMOs in annual March against Monsanto | OregonLive.com: "They came on foot, on tall bikes and, in Ryan Dittmer's case, on crutches.

The Vancouver resident was one of the throngs of protesters who stretched over three city blocks in an annual march Saturday against the use of genetically modified seeds and the conglomerate that manufactures them, Monsanto.

Dittmer, who broke his foot two weeks ago while working in a warehouse, joined the protest, despite the boot on his left leg and the challenge of keeping up with the fast-marching crowd on crutches.

"I feel like I need to put some effort into it," he said, adding that it seems government focuses on regulating the little guy instead of big businesses including Monsanto. "We need to show strength. ... We need to get out and fight."

The protest was one of six scheduled for Oregon and one of several more around the globe. It comes on the heels of votes in Jackson and Josephine county banning the cultivation of genetically modified seeds."
