Genetically Modified Food, Genetic Engineering in Food, Shedding Light: The Truth about GMOs:
The Oregon Labeling of Genetically-Engineered Foods, Measure 27 (2002) would have required the labeling of GMO products. Monsanto and other biotech companies, along with the food manufacturer industry, set a budget of $6 million to oppose Measure 27 on the premise that "labeling would be cost-prohibitive to Oregonian consumers." The Coalition Against the Costly Labeling Law claimed that Oregonians would have to pay $550 per family each year to label GMO food products and the labeling scheme was "promoted by a small group of organic food companies that would benefit financially if consumers were scared into buying their food products. Supporters of Measure 27 had a budget of $150,000.
