Consumers Union: Genetically Engineered Foods

Consumers Union advocates mandatory safety approval before any genetically engineered food is put on the market – contrary to the system of voluntary safety consultations currently used the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A 2004 report by the National Academy of Sciences indicated that substances that are toxic or cause allergies may be introduced through genetic engineering and that it may be difficult to "predict and assess unintended adverse effects on human health."
