Next Meal: Engineering Food Survey

In this half-hour special, QUEST Northern California explores genetically engineered crops in the wake of Proposition 37, the 2012 ballot initiative that would have required foods containing genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled in California.

  1. Is the "Next Meal" a journalistic piece that explores the science behind genetic engineering while including multiple perspectives on the issue?
  2.  What are the multiple perspectives "Next Meal" delves into regarding GMO food and the impact it has on the environment, animals, farmers, children and people?
  3. Are the benefits of genetically engineered foods worth the risks?
  4. What are the risks of GMO foods that are explained in "Next Meal"?
  5. What does the future hold for research and regulations such as labeling?
  6. Do you believe that the viewpoint of farmers who grow GM crops were evenly represented?
  7. Do you believe that people with no background in the GMO issue would have a positive or negative view of Bio-Technology after watching this informational report?
  8. If the "Next Meal" was shown days, hours before the end of an election (like in WA), do you believe the 30-minute program would persuade public opinion to vote in favor or against GMO food labeling?
  9. As defined on Wikipeda, did "Next Meal" follow Journalism ethics and standards of truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability? If your answer is "no", please elaborate.
Please post your answers in the comments below.

Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association and Governor Jay Inslee

No on I-522 money flooding in from out of state - Spin Control - Spokesman.com - June 13, 2013:

“The biotech industry in Washington has enormous potential,” said Clay Siegall, President and CEO of Seattle Genetics, “Jay was a recognized leader on this issue in Congress because he understands this industry. With the right kind of leadership and the right kind of policies, Washington can become an important international hub for research and development, manufacturing and sales of these innovative new medicines and products. Jay will provide that leadership as governor.”

Is Governor Inslee undecided about I-522 and labeling genetically engineered foods? (KURW Oct. 9)

"The No on I-522 campaign was formed by the Washington Farm Bureau, which has contributed “in-kind” contributions of $1,610 for staff and meeting time. Until last month, all of the campaign’s contributions were in-kind, from the farm bureau and other northwest organizations like the Spokane-based Far West Agribusiness Association and the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association of Seattle." (The Spokesman-Review)

Chris Rivera, Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association President and CEO:
“The long-term vision for the biotechnology industry is to heal, feed and fuel the world, and the only way we’re going to be able to take care of nine billion people by 2050 is through biology and biotechnology.”

Biotechnology Agriculture
Genetically modified organisms are increasingly a topic of conversation in society, the media and the internet.  The many questions and answers are often charged with a lot of emotion ranging from optimism and excitement to skepticism and even fear. The biotech industry stands 100 percent behind the health and safety of the GMO crops on today’s market, but acknowledges that we haven’t always done the best job communicating about them. GMO Answers was created to answer your questions about how food is grown and to engage in a conversation. They invite people to “Join us. Ask tough questions. Be skeptical. Be open. We look forward to sharing answers.” (WWBA - Public Policies)

The WWBA supports the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade-agreement (TPP): Protect biotech in Trans-Pacific Partnership trade-agreement talks The U.S. should strengthen intellectual-property protection for biotech companies in negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, writes guest columnists Matt Morrison and Chris Rivera. About Howard Vlieger
Howard Vlieger is a third generation family farmer who has been a “student of the soil,” studying why and how the soil works as it does, since 1989.  Howard lives on the family farm where he was born and raised in northwest Iowa. He assists his son with some of the farming duties.  Since 1992 Howard has been a crop nutrition advisor and has founded two companies to help family farmers reduce their dependency on chemical- based farming and transition to biological and or organic production.  Howard works and teaches as an independent crop nutrition advisor, helping crop and livestock farmers all across the US.
Howard also works with scientists and researchers around the world to develop effective solutions, based on the latest science, for the real-life problems farmers are experiencing because of GMO crops and the chemicals used in growing them. Howard is a co-author and the primary coordinator of a first of its kind scientific study: the feeding of GMO grain and non-GMO grain to hogs for their lifetime as a meat animal.  Howard is an internationally recognized speaker on the topic of GMOs. He believes people deserve to be educated and know what is in their food.
Howard serves on the board of directors of the Farm & Ranch Freedom Alliance (FARFA) and the Council for Healthy Food Systems (CHFS). He is a strong conservative and for many years has been a delegate for his county to the Iowa State Republican Convention. His greatest accomplishments are being a Christian husband for 32 plus years to his wonderful wife Pam and father to three young adult children & a proud grandfather of one.
About Pamm Larry
Pamm Larry, farmer, midwife, businesswoman and a gutsy grandmother of three was so distraught about our modern day food system that she quit her day job and spent her time educating herself on GMOs and how to apply for a ballot initiative. She then went on the road and heard a resounding YES from the people in California to pursue a Ballot Initiative. This effort resulted in the Yes On Prop 37, California Right To Know Campaign of November 2012.
Grandma Larry and her galvanized cadre of concerned citizens represent the sane, spirited voice of a growing number of skeptical Americans who don't necessarily trust better living through chemistry and who demand labeling of genetically modified foods.

I-522 GMO Grassroots Groups Organize September Speaking Tour For Grandmother Pamm Larry and Farmer Howard Vlieger

Press Release:

I-522 GMO Grassroots Groups Organize September Speaking Tour For Grandmother Pamm Larry and Farmer Howard Vlieger

SEATTLE, WA (August 19, 2013) Washington grassroots volunteers for I-522 have asked Pamm Larry, the initial instigator of the genetically engineered labeling act in California, and Iowa Farmer Howard Vlieger (R) to participate in a statewide speaking tour in September to educate voters on GMO Food Labeling issues and help organize the grassroots troops. Annmarie Gianni Skin Care and Good Earth Natural Foods are funding the fall tour.

“Having Pamm Larry come to Washington to help with I-522 is a no-brainer.  She started the GE Labeling initiative movement, and I-522 wouldn't be on our Washington state ballot this November if it weren't for Pamm's efforts in California last year,” explains Sarah Stolar, a coordinator of Volunteer’s for I-522.  “She has been through ALL of this already, so both grassroots groups and the Yes on 522 campaign have a lot to learn from her.  We do not need or want to waste energy reinventing the wheel; we need to take the valuable lessons learned from California's experience and use them to improve our own work.  Learning from California's Prop 37 and not repeating the same mistakes is the only way we can successfully pass I-522.  Who better to help guide the way than Pamm Larry?”

“Washington will finish what Prop 37 started but was waylaid by Chemical and Junk Food Companies in their campaign of misinformation and distractions from the issue which is labeling of our foods,” explains Pamm Larry, Grandmother of three and Label GMO Food movement initial instigator. “We have a right to know what we are buying and feeding our children and ourselves. I-522 is the next step and is everyone's ballot initiative.  When we all unite no matter where we are from, we are a powerful force.  California Grassroots stand with the people of Washington in continuing the fight for the right to know what's in our food.  We will do all we can to assure victory there. I am delighted and honored to have the opportunity to join hands with the people of Washington to let them know about our oppositions dirty tactics in California during Prop 37.   We are uniting across state lines because this isn't just about Washington- it's about all of us. No matter what city, state, or country we live in, every step we take anywhere for food sovereignty is a step for all of us.”

“I have been involved with research and testing of GMOs since 1994. I have seen the damage caused by GMOs at ground level,” says Howard Vlieger, “What is happening to the soil, the crops, the livestock and sadly now the children and people. Can we really believe what we are being told by the companies that say GMOs are the way of future for food production or is there more to the story? Are you willing to bet the future of your farm and the health of your family on the word of GMO companies without exploring the rest of the story for yourself?”

"Every action and decision that we make as individuals and as a company will have an impact on the environment, “states Rachel Pachivas, Annmarie Gianni Skin Care. “We strive to make this as little of an impact as possible. We search out for the best and most sustainable sourcing in everything we do. From the paper that our letterhead is on, to the oil that makes its way onto your skin, there is careful and conscious thought that goes into every decision made. We actively support LabelGMOs and the movement around these issues. A few of us here in the company had volunteered during Prop 37 in California and know how inspiring Pamm Larry is, so of course... we are happy to help her get up to Washington and support I-522. A victory in Washington will be monumental for the food movement... it's time we stand up to Ag-Biotech industry and demand we know what they are putting in our food!”

About Pamm Larry

Pamm Larry, farmer, midwife, businesswoman and a gutsy grandmother of three was so distraught about our modern day food system that she quit her day job and spent her time educating herself on GMOs and how to apply for a ballot initiative. Next, she searched out her team and went straight to the state capital to painstakingly navigate through the bureaucratic muddle of tedious paperwork necessary to put an initiative on the California ballot.

Grandma Larry and her galvanized cadre of concerned citizens represent the sane, spirited voice of a growing number of skeptical Americans who don't necessarily trust better living through chemistry.

Initiative to label genetically engineered food sent to Legislature | Northwest Voices | The Seattle Times

Initiative to label genetically engineered food sent to Legislature | Northwest Voices | The Seattle Times

Initiative may bring groups together

Hurrah! I was glad to see in “Food-labeling initiative gets enough signers to go forward” [NWSaturday, Feb. 2] that I-522, the initiative that would require the labeling of genetically modified food, will be on November’s ballot.

This is good news for everybody, particularly free-market conservatives. The free market can work only if consumers have complete information about what they’re buying.
It’s also good news for people of faith, many of whom don’t approve of humans playing God, and for environmentalists, who espouse the precautionary principle. Maybe this is the one issue that can bring us all together.

If GMOs are safe, disclosure brings no problems

I am a 59-year-old grandfather, father and sibling. I have a number of years learning life’s lessons, especially with respect to what I choose to eat. As careful as I try to be, reading labels and paying attention to ingredients and additives, I have learned that I have almost certainly ingested a substantial amount of genetically modified or engineered foods and ingredients.

I understand that the Food and Drug Administration has accepted the studies that have been financed and/or performed by the purveyors of these substances. I remain unconvinced of the efficacy of the process and the product. I am also concerned that a genetically altered plant or animal will breed with previously unaltered plants or animals, altering organisms that are not intended.

I am excited to see that, thanks to Initiative 522 being slated for the ballot, we have the chance to force disclosure, and perhaps I will eat very little that has been genetically engineered. If GMOs and GEs are truly safe, what is the problem with disclosure?

Label GMO Food Initiative I-522 Pasts First Bureaucratic Hurdle | Videoblogging 206 - seattlepi.com

Label GMO Food Initiative I-522 Pasts First Bureaucratic Hurdle | Videoblogging 206 - seattlepi.com

Late Thursday afternoon, The Secretary of State’s Election Division finished the review of Initiative 522, and Secretary of State Kim Wyman signed the official certification. "The People's Right To Know Genetically Engineered Food Act" now moves to the legislature, which will do nothing, enact the initiative into law or modify it. Typically, lawmakers pass initiatives along to the public to vote on in the November election.

(Photo: Leslie Ann Stoddard GMO Free Idaho co-founder)

The grassroots campaign turned in 353,331 signatures. A random sample estimated 17 percent were invalid. Washington law required 241,153 valid signatures to qualify.

The initiative would require most raw agricultural commodities, processed foods, seeds and seed stocks to be labeled as genetically engineered when offered for retail sale.

Last year, California voters rejected a similar Label GMO Food propitiation after multi-billion dollar corporations spent more than $45.6 million on an October multimedia advertising campaign that shifted public opinion against the food labeling law.

Although a 2012 poll showed that 91 percent of Americans supported labeling GMO food, Prop 37 was defeated 51.5 to 47.5 percent.

“I-522 is about freedom of choice so we can decide what we feed our families and whether we want to buy and eat genetically engineered foods,” said Trudy Bialic, spokesperson for PCC Natural Markets.

The opposition to the GMO labeling law states that industry sponsored research has shown that the use of recombinant DNA techniques to modify foods has never shown that GMO foods are unsafe to animals or humans. They believe that labeling GMO food gives consumers no useful information. The four bullet points that they used successfully in their multimillion dollar 2012 California media blitz were:
  • Deceptive Labeling Scheme
  • Shakedown Lawsuits
  • Higher Grocery Bills
  • Prop. 37 Would Hurt California Farmers
Regarding the last point, in researching GMO Farmers online, I discovered this interview with Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser:

Percy Schmeiser vs Monsanto: The Story of a Canadian Farmer's Fight to Defend the Rights of Farmers and the Future of Seeds

PERCY SCHMEISER: It started in 1998, when Monsanto laid what they call a patent infringement lawsuit against my wife and myself, and they charged us that we were growing their genetic altered, or GMO, canola, as we call it in Canada. And that was the beginning of it. And as GMOs were introduced in North America in 1996, so this was two years after the introduction.

AMY GOODMAN: Explain what a GMO is.

PERCY SCHMEISER: Genetic modified organisms. And what that really means is that they took a gene from another life form, put it into canola, which made it resistant to Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup.

AMY GOODMAN: And explain what canola is.

PERCY SCHMEISER: Canola is — well, here — in most parts of the world, we call it rapeseed. But canola is an oil-based crop, and primarily it is used for making cooking oil. And the meal from it, after it’s pressed, is good animal feed, both for cattle and for pigs.

AMY GOODMAN: And explain how it ended up on your property.

PERCY SCHMEISER: My neighbor had grown it in 1997, and the following year it had true cross-pollination. But at that time, we believe it was primarily the contamination came from seeds blown in the wind, transportation by the farmer to the market, to his field, and from his field to his granaries.

GMO food-labeling initiative goes to Legislature | The Seattle Times

GMO food-labeling initiative goes to Legislature

A legislative initiative that would require companies to label genetically engineered foods has received enough signatures to move forward, the Secretary of State’s office said Friday.

People who want to label foods containing genetically engineered ingredients (or GMOs, for genetically modified organisms) say the products raise health concerns, in part because the engineering sometimes includes DNA from animals, bacteria and viruses, not plants.

They also are concerned that GMO plants can cross-pollinate onto non-GMO farms, creating crops that are genetically modified. Labeling proponents say farmers in that situation may not want such crops and may also have trouble marketing them to foreign countries, many of which do not allow GMOs.

Our food system is ripe for change | Local News | The Seattle Times

Our food system is ripe for change | Local News | The Seattle Times

“I think that there needs to be a deeper discussion of the structural issues around our dysfunctional food system,” she said. What’s wrong is “deregulation, consolidation and control of the food supply by a few powerful companies.” That is not going to be fixed by a few more people shopping at the farmers market or by arguing over farm subsidies.

“It’s a great thing to vote with the fork, but we need to vote with the vote and keep the people we vote for accountable,” Hauter said.

There are a gazillion books on food and the food supply, but her book isn’t the dessert at the end of the line, it’s an eat-your-vegetables textbook on the political and financial history, current condition and possible future of food in America. It says this on the cover: “The battle over the future of food and farming in America.”

Battles over farm policy have raged at various times in the country’s history, and Hauter, an anthropologist by training, draws on the work of experts from numerous other fields to cover the history, politics, science and economics of food.
