This is a resource blog for GMO Free News, a Google Hangout hosted by women for women who want to know what is in their food.
Now an estimated 80 percent of processed food in the U.S. contains ingredients from crops altered in the lab to make them hardier, more resistant to disease and pests, and more tolerant of herbicides.

World Food Day Oct. 16-17 DC Rally and Route Information
A clip from our 1+ hour panel discussion with Alexis Bayden Mayer, political director for Organic Consumers Association (OCA).
Video Transcript:
Alexis: Ok so once that action was called and we knew that the DARK Act was at least in Congress. We did know how far it would go. The Truth in Labeling Coalition and Moms Across America decided to do a lobby day on Friday, Oct 16, and before the Saturday Oct 17 protest and so we've got a lot of events happening the weekend before the DARK Act gets a hearing in the Senate.
So, the timing couldn't be better.
It's really a wonderful time to come to DC. If you live in the DC area, if you can make a drive here in a day, there's no excuse not to be here and if perhaps you can take time away from your family, away from your job, to travel from a longer distance please come.
It is going to be lots of fun.
The only downside of that is Congress is actually in recess next week from the 13th to the 16th. So, its also a good idea if you're involved in your your local dominant parties politics, you might get invites to events your congresspersons, your senators, are going to be and whatever your politics, do get involved in the party because the party does control access to the politicians and you'll rarely know where the politicians are going to be unless you're part of the dominant party in your area.
If you want an opportunity to speak to a politician, a recess is actually really good time for that. So. The Columbus Day recess next week, if you're staying in town, hunt down the politicians in your area and try to speak to your Senator and even your Congressperson. Let them know that you know how they voted on HR 1599 and you're either very happy or very disappointed. So, it's a good time to reach out to the Senate and the Congress and Friday will be a really fun lobby day with the Truth in Labeling Coalition and Moms Across America.
Also on Friday, we're going to do a march on Friday afternoon. So, it'll be around rush hour and will be walking through downtown DC stopping at various points along the way. We're going to be going by the White House, going by the office of the US trade Representative, going by the Chamber of Commerce.
We didn't mention the Chamber of Commerce. But, its worse than the Grocery Manufacturers Association. Because it is all US businesses and they organized like the Farm Bureau down to the local level.
So, if you're any business person no matter how small or progressive, you probably have to be part of the Chamber of Commerce, like, if you're a farmer and you want to get insurance for your farm, you probably have to be a member of the Farm Bureau.
So, the Chamber of Commerce is a very, very big powerful organization and they do the bidding of the largest corporations. It does not represent their small businesses which probably make up the majority of the members. It directly represents corporations like Monsanto.
We have direct evidence that since trade talks have been going on with Europe. the Chamber of Commerce has been putting pressure on European regulators not to move through very important consumer safety regulations related to dangerous pesticides, specifically endocrine disruptors.
The European Union has a new policy on endocrine disruptors that have not been put into place yet because of the US Chamber of Commerce blocking it. Because they say, "well you are going to have to deal with this new trade agreement that probably will preempt a lot of these regulations so you might as well not bother putting out this important public safety regulation at this point to protect kids from endocrine disruptors." So that is the type of thing that we know that the Chamber of Commerce is doing on a regular basis.
So, we are stopping by the Chamber of Commerce and then we're heading to the EPA and I hear that Monsanto the Grocery Manufacturers Association is perhaps on the way to the EPA from Afayette Park where these other locations are. And so, perhaps we'll stop by Monsanto's DC headquarters. The Grocery Manufacturers Association's DC headquarters their lobbying offices. Where they do their DARK Act strategy, no doubt, and then we're heading to the EPA for a rally at 5 p.m.
This I'm really excited about this because about once per month I get together with people who work at other non-profit in DC like Friends of the Earth, Center for Food Safety, Beyond Pesticides and we deliver petitions to the EPA about the pesticides that are killing pollinators and we've delivered literally millions of signatures on petitions to save the bees and the butterflies and EPA is not listening to us and of course there are serious human health problems associated with these pesticides as well.
Zen Honeycutt from Moms Across America will be speaking at the EPA protest talking specifically about glyphosate and why glyphosate needs to be ban and this is an opportune time.
The EPA was supposed to put out its new re-registration for glyphosate in July of this year and they haven't done it yet and I think that they have not done it yet because new information came out that glyphosate is probably causing cancer and the EPA can't sweep this under the rug so easily when the World Health Organization is making these announcements. It's all based on science that has already been published. Its just a new review of it. But, the EPA has always done its own reviews that always, you know, pushed individual papers under the rug and ignored the large body of evidence. But, now the World Health Organization saying very clearly, "yep, it is clear from the evidence that glyphosate is probably causing cancer."
So, obviously human health problems associated with glyphosate, cancer is only the tip of the iceberg and then of course glyphosate harms beef and the glyphosate GMOs Roundup Ready GMOs they are always coated with neonicotinoids, that is a product that's created by Bayer, but Monsanto is more than happy to coat all of its GMOs with neonicotinoids pesticides that we know kills bees and glyphosate is also destroying Monarch butterfly habitat.
Monarch butterfly habitat is the Milkweed. Milkweed has actually survived in the agricultural region of the mid-west the corridor between Mexico and Canada that the butterflies fly through every year.
But, since the advent of the Roundup Ready herbicides, Milkweed is very tough it can survive may be one dosage of herbicides per year. It can survive till up. It generally just gets kind of more distributed if it gets tilled up once a year but it cannot survive repeated doses of herbicides and when they created the Roundup Ready crops they weren't just using round up at the end of the growing season before planting to clear the field they've been spraying roundup continuously on the plant throughout the growing season.
So, our genetically modified Roundup Ready corn and our round-up ready soy is not only increasing our exposure to Roundup but it is increasing the amount of roundup in the environment. It's killed the milkweed and the introduction of Roundup Ready crops had been decimated and that has decimated the butterfly population more than 90 percent loss in the butterfly population since Roundup Ready crops were introduced.
So, this is, you know, we're about to lose a very beautiful iconic species and it is paralleled with the loss of our health and human population. So, you know the Monarch butterfly is worthy on its own, but I think it's also a symbol of the fragility of health in the human population as well.
Rachel Linden: I agree. They are the canary in the coal mine for our environment Hash tag #Epicfail.
Kathleen Hallal: But, I think the other thing too that it's trying to bubble up to the surface is how systematic their programs have been to buy scientists and buy universities and how it's being uncovered now that these big industries especially big Ag but also Pharma and other industries have bought off scientists to published papers for them and then they take these papers into their Representative or Senator and they say vote this way or approve this, you know, this looks greater you know this is a great study and we're finding out that it's sort of like a house of cards. They've just set it up and it hasn't really been studied and on all these problems you bring up deserve real independent scientific attention. We have to stop, as you say “sweeping it at all under the rug.”
Because it is growing and growing and how much longer are we going to ignore this?
Rachel: Biotech genetic engineering was built on lies. It came from lies. It only exists in the dark in the lies and we shine a light on it we talk about it and we bring attention to it...it cannot survive.
Kathleen: They are not telling the truth about scientific consensus. There is not scientific consensus. We know lots of preeminent scientists worldwide who are questioning this. How many scientists have signed the petition Alexis? I think it's like 800 scientists worldwide who are questioning the safety of GMOs and demanding more science.
We're not people who are not science based. We want more science. Please. We want stop pretending that there's not any science that shows harm from glyphosate, Roundup Ready crops, GMO crops, BT.
We want all the products explored further and we want to stop being basically force fed these foods. So, we need to stop the DARK Act. We need to have labeling now and we need more science now.

Bought The Movie - GMOs, Big Pharma, Vaccines
Bought Movie | Jeff Hays FilmBought Movie | Your Health Brought To You By Wall Street:
Bought is a film about the issue of health being sold out from underneath individuals through big pharmaceutical companies (Big Pharma), dangerous vaccinations and a food supply chain contaminated by the use of GMO’s. This film has the support of some of the world’s most acclaimed experts in research, medicine, holistic care and natural health. Based upon the film’s trailer, it has been dubbed controversial by media outlets even though it focuses on educating the public and arming people globally with the truth and facts about Big Pharma, vaccines and the food supply.
Film backers believe each person has a right to be informed about the truth and empowered by the
facts in order to make educated decisions about their own health, food and medicine. Bought – a film about how Americans’ health, food and our children’s health have been sold out from underneath of us.

Now brought to you by Wall Street… “If you thought they hurt us with the banks, wait till you see what they’re doing to health care.” Vaccines. GMOs. Big Pharma. Three big, BIG, okay… HUGE topics in one film. Why? Why not 3 films, why put all this in one movie? Great question, 2 answers. 1st and most importantly: We need to band together. We need a mainstream film, not another radical movie that only interests the “already converted”. Over 5 million people supported Prop 37 in CA. Reportedly, over 2 million w...ndustrialized food, our insane vaccine expansion, and our love affair with pharmaceuticals- it’s the same villain. It’s a risky story to tell, but would be a tragedy to passively consent to with silence. There is something horribly wrong with health care today. Huge money, billions and billions of dollars flowing into the same pockets. Meanwhile, MD’s aren’t being allowed to actually practice the art of medicine and anyone who questions vaccination safety, pharmaceuticals, factory farms, etc. is ridiculed and belittled. Meanwhile, the billions keep flowing, carried on a river of pain and anguish. Huge corporations funded by individual misery, one broken life at a time. Three huge stories, each worthy of multiple films, but each brought together by one staggering fact: it’s the same villain. These three story lines converge on Wall Street, in a tale of corruption, greed and shocking lack of conscience.

Moms to EPA: RECALL ROUNDUP ( Glyphosate) - Moms Across America
Moms Across America meeting with the EPA to Recall Roundup May 27th 12:30 pm
Meeting with the Glyphosate Review Board: Neil Andersen, Tom Moriarity, Khue Ngyun, Anne Overstreet and other board members.
The Moms + scientists:
By Friday they responded that the levels of glyphosate in breast milk are not a health risk to humans and asked us to stop so they "can do their jobs." We said their job is to Recall Roundup, not tell us it is safe.
They agreed to meet with us.
We moms, backed by PhD scentists, lawyers and a marine, 11 all together, met with the 9 EPA Glyphosate Review Board members to Recall Roundup on Tuesday May 27th at 12:30 in Arlington VA.
They met with us for 2 hours instead of 1 hour. They were glued to their seats. I saw the look in their eyes and I saw that we have people on our side. I also saw fear, resentment, denial and anger.
Regardless, moms will not give up. We will protect our children.
We pointed out that:
In conclusion, they dd not agree to recall roundup.
They did agree to include the scientific study which MAA and Sustainable Pulse got fully funded.
They did agree to give us the protocols to make sure the study can be included in their review.
They did agree to recommend that "higher ups" meeting with us would be worth while.
We have demanded all files re: glyphosate submitted to the EPA under the Freedom of Information Act.
We are planning to meet with the EPA again in July, ( TBD) to go to the Senate, to push for testing of Yakima valley moms with birth defects 8X higher down stream from glyphosate spraying, and to continue to do what ever our moms feel will be effective in being heard.
We will not stop. We will not give up. The love for our children will never end.
This is PCB's and DDT all over again, yet far more toxic and pervasive.
It must stop now.

We pointed out that:
- The product is not doing what the manufacturers said it would do, which is not bio accumulate. It is bio accumulating in our breast milk and numerous studies show serious harm to mammals from glyphosate/Roundup.
- There are numerous studies showing serious harm to mammals and humans including endocrine disruption, birth defects, infertility and sterility, kidney disease, cancer cell growth, the destruction of gut bacteria ( it is a patented anti biotic) which leads to auto immune, autism, diabetes, violnec and mental illness.
- We want the chemical NOT to be approved in the registration review.
- We want this toxic treadmill of chemical cocktails in our food to stop. They are poisons and they are hurting our fetuses, babies and children.
Enough is enough. - We have faith that the EPA board members love their children as much as we do and that they will do the courageous thing and recall Roundup.
In conclusion, they dd not agree to recall roundup.

Moms Across America Director Zen Honeycutt's Speech on GE Labeling
Capitol Steps Jan 6th CA State Grange Rally
Thank you! Good Morning!
How many of you have been volunteering since Prop 37? How many of you marched in the Moms Across America Marches on the 4th of July? How many of you care about what you eat?
First of all I want to say I am truly honored to be here today with all of YOU. Whether you have just started or have been doing this for years, you are what makes America great. You are America’s heros. Also, without you who came before me, the health of my family Todd, Ben, Bodee and Bronson, would not be what it is today. So we thank you very, very much.
I am here today because of love.
We are all here because we love our families, our communities, our freedoms, our environment, our dogs and cats, our bees and butterflies.
We love our farmers and we have FAITH in our farmers.
We have faith that they can and will farm as has been done for thousands of years,
without GMOs containing foreign proteins and the use of toxic chemicals.
We have faith in Californians.
Californians do not back down!
We will not give up.
Our love for our families will never end.
We insist on GMO labeling now!
Some may say that it is not likely, but that doesn’t concern us. After Prop 37, which was a win in so many ways…my son Ben said “Mom, even Star Wars took six episodes.” And they had Yoda! Our children are our inspiration and that will never end!
My son went GMO free and organic for 4 months and his life threatening allergic reactions were drastically reduced. This past year, his nut allergy decreased from a 19 down to a .2. This is not just about an allergy; this is about LIFE and the people we love.
It is not enough that our family eats organic, however. My son’s future spouses are out there somewhere and if they want to, I want them to be able to experience the profound love that it is to have their own child someday. Today, young couples have a 30% “failure to conceive” rate. That is the lowest in recorded US history. Everyone needs to know about GMOs!
I asked myself what could I do? Inspired by Jeffrey Smith’s “Tipping Point Network” and Robyn O’Brien’s Patriotism on a Plate” I thought of 4th of July Parades. We could reachthousands locally and millions nationally in a single day. And it would be fun! With the partnership of the CA State Grange and support of Pamm Larry, Kathleen Hallal and many more, I founded Moms Across America and the March to Label GMOs in 4th of July parades. What happened was amazing.
Leaders from all across America emerged. Moms and supporters said, “I am the one who will have a group march in my 4th of July parade and educate my whole town know about GMOs.” And they did. In 172 parades in 44 states, generous, committed people made banners, signs, and floats and sang as they marched down Main streets all across America. We directly reached an estimated 1.5 million people and tens of millions more through the 120 media venues: radio, websites and newspapers, which picked up the story including CNN and Fox News. It was an empowering gathering of community which has helped to grow our cause and raise awareness about GMOs. Our food system may be broken but the people are not. We are creative, courageous and committed and we make a huge contribution to others by sharing with love.

Since the 4th of July parades we have received hundreds of stories, such as: Karen’s son went from daily use of an inhaler to never having to use an inhaler again after switching to an organic diet.
Cindy’s son switched to organic for two years ( and she is a single Mom who makes 40K so this was not easy, but it was important) and this year when he entered high school, NOT ONE of his new high school teachers could tell he was ever severely autistic.
His life is dramatically improved. Who knows how our country will benefit by the contribution this one person will make? He has, WE have a NEW future because his Mom found out about GMOs.
The projected level of autism is predicted to be 1 out of 2 of our children in the US within the next 20 years or sooner. That is half our children. What kind of society will we have? What kind of future and economy will we have if our children’s futures are compromised? We Moms say, not on our watch! We will not stop! The love for our children will never end. We want a new future NOW!
We demand GMO labeling now so that the millions of people who still don’t know about GMOs can have the ability to take care of the families they love. Moms see that GMOs ARE substantially different and our kids get better when we get them off GMO foods. We demand that people of ALL economic backgrounds have access to GMO free and pesticide free solutions and we have faith in our farmers that they can provide them.
How many of you think that most people really don’t want to know about GMOs and pesticides because it’s too inconvenient? Let’s check in. How many of you know someone with diabetes, obesity, asthma, auto immune disorders, allergies or autism?
Look around. I assert everyone really wants to know about GMOs because everyone knows someone in America who is sick. 1 out of 2 of our children have some form of chronic. 1 out of 2 of our American men and 1 out of 3 American women are expected to get cancer…so everyone WANTS to know about GMOs and pesticides because we have enough problems & we want solutions! We want a new future now!
So what can we do? Be a leader and inspire leaders! Join us in the celebration and sign up to host a 4th of July parade by Feb 14th “Share the Love, Sign Up your Parade Day” so we can have sponsors support the printing of the GMO flyers to pass out at the parades.
Be the one to say, MY TOWN WILL KNOW about GMOs.
Give them a new future.
Go to momsacrossamerica.com and host one of the 75 parades in California and 589 parades on our list across the USA. Adopt a “Sister City”, another town with a parade, and call and connect with other , moms in the Moms Club, La Leche League or Holistic Moms Network, share about GMOs and support and foster new leaders! When we get outside of our comfort zone, we will win.
We can reach 600,000 in California and 5 million people in the USA in a single day. We are called “consumers” AND we are also the creators of our future. The future belongs to YOU. The future belongs to me. The future belongs to US. This is OUR time for health and freedom in California and America! Thank you!

PBS Boycott: Zen Honeycutt Moms Across America

Photo: Zen Honeycutt, Kathleen Hallal , MAAM co-founders, our families and the MAAM Team
Moms Across America is extremely disappointed in the Seattle PBS station's choice to air a pro GMO piece twice before the WA ballot election for 522.
It is irresponsible to attempt to sway public vote or give the pro GMO side a venue to explain how "great" their products are. (Article: Did Seattle PBS Station Sway Voters To Reject GMO Labeling Initiative?)
The fact is that Moms all across America have seen their children's health issues skyrocket since GMOs were sucked into our food and we see our kids get better when we take GMOs out of their diet and eat organic.
We have testimonials from hundreds of Moms that autism, allergy, asthma, IBS, excema, stomach aches and auto immune disorders have gotten better or symptoms have disapeared completely after going GMO free.
Until further testing is done PBS has no right to suggest GMOs are safe.
There has never been any long term human study testing on the safety of GMOs.
We ask PBS to right this wrong to the public by producing a piece in which you capture the stories of the Moms whose children have gotten better off GMOs. Tell the real story about GMOS and America's children.
- Zen Honeycutt, Founder Moms Across America
Did Seattle PBS Station Sway Voters To Reject GMO Labeling Initiative?
Next Meal: Engineering Food was posted on YouTube May 7, 2013 and premiered six days later in the San Francisco Bay Area on KQED Channel 9. Originally, the thirty-minute special report was scheduled to air on PBS stations nationwide, after the Nov. 5 Washington State election, Nov. 13.
Randy Brinson, Executive Director of KCST Programming, decided to broadcast the QUEST science program on the Seattle PBS station with a viewing audience of almost two-thirds of Washington's population, a couple of days before the end of the election because it was "timely".
On the Washington State ballot was Initiative 522, a bill that would require genetically engineered foods to be labeled.
TV Guide states the premise of the show is "an examination of genetically engineered crops, including how they're created; their pros and cons; and what the future might hold for research and such regulations as labeling."

Photo: Grassroots Volunteers for I-522, Spokane, WA
Upon learning of the re-scheduling of "Next Meal" on KCST, Washington State grassroots volunteer supporters of I-522 sent e-mails and made phone calls to the station in an attempt to prevent the program from airing days before the end of the election. Since the program, funded by the National Science Foundation, heavily featured the pros of genetically engineered crops and did not fully explore the cons that it could sway voters to reject the ballot initiative.
When the program was shown in May, audience members posted comments on the KQED website and the KQED Science YouTube page regarding the biased bio-tech slant.
KQED member "Jenny" posted the comment below 5 months ago that represents viewer back lash:
"In your description of this piece, you state:
'Are the benefits of genetically engineered foods worth the risks?'
"I heard a lot of talk about the benefit, but I didn't hear anything about the risks.
"Where are the scientists on the other side of the argument?
"This special doesn't even try to be serious.
"I am amazed that KQED would put something like this on the air."
The day after "Next Meal" was first shown on KCST October 30, two articles were published regarding the show:
Steven Peters, Natural Revolution, stated in his article, "PBS to Air Pro-GMO Film in Washington Days Before Vote on Labeling Initiative,"
"This film Next Meal: Engineering Food is little more than a commercial for the biotech industry. It’s a shame that public broadcasting has been co-opted by big corporations. The airing of the documentary film, Next Meal: Engineering Food is indeed not an impartial look at both sides of the GMO controversy. The undertones are very much Pro-GMO; not showing both sides equally, but in favor of GMOs 'and the chemicals used to grown them being safe'."
Retired US Navy staff scientist Dr. Nancy Swanson wrote in her Seattle Examiner article, "Et Tu, PBS?" that:
"This program looks like the propaganda put forth by the chemical industries who are promoting GMOs. On the program, they trotted out an array of plant biologists, all singing the praises of GE crops and how they are environmentally friendly and are going to feed the world."
Last week, the Yes On 522 campaign conceded the election. Washington State voters failed to pass I-522, the initiative that would have labeled genetically engineered foods, by the narrow margin of 39,000 votes (49%-51%).
In her letter to supporters, Trudy Bialic, Co-Chair of Yes On 522 and PCC Natural Markets director of consumer affairs, did not mention the Seattle PBS stations broadcast. Instead she focused on the 22 million dollars spent by the opposition: "As we continue to push for labeling, we also must work to reverse the perversion of our democratic election procedures with unlimited corporate spending."
Did the four broadcasts of Next Meal between Oct. 30 and Nov. 5 sway voters? Did it, in fact, influence the outcome of the Washington State election?
If so, it is a huge slap in the face to several KCST donors:

PCC Natural Markets is a KCST local programming underwriter. The certified organic retail cooperative that operates nine stores serving 46,000 active members, spent over $250,000 to collect signatures to put the initiative on the ballot last year and to fund the "Yes On 522" campaign this year.
The Newman's Own Foundation is a KCST matching fund donor. Royalties paid by Newman's Own Organics for use of the Newman name help support foundation activities. Nell Newman, the oldest daughter of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman and founder of Newman's Own Organics, states on the company website: "GEs have no place in organic agriculture and [we] are calling for a moratorium until more scientific research has been done on the safety of this technology."
Both organizations were asked if they would support a boycott on PBS, along with Grassroots Volunteers for I-522, GMO Awareness Group (GAG) of the North Olympic Peninsula, the Organic Consumers Association, Moms Across America and GMO Free USA, by withdrawing their financial support to the Seattle station.

The Seattle based PCC replied with this e-mail:
"At this time, PCC does not plan a boycott of KCTS for the airing of this show.
"It would be unfair to boycott KCTS for airing this show even with the assumption (and it is an assumption) that they aired it to persuade public opinion to vote No on this initiative.
"The Seattle Times editorial board chose to support No on 522 but we did not pull our advertising from their papers.
"We honor and agree with freedom of the press and free speech.
"We plan to continue to support KCTS with underwriting of local programming.
"Sincerely, Laurie Albrecht Director of Marketing / PCC Natural Markets"
The News's Own Foundation Response:
"Newman’s Own Foundation turns all royalties and profits from the sale of Newman’s Own products into charitable donations. To date, Paul Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have given over $380 million to thousands of charities around the world.
It is the Foundation’s policy not to comment on individual grantees. However, we do review each organization prior to awarding grants, to determine its fit within the Foundation’s priorities. Further information about our grant making policies is available on the Foundation’s website at www.NewmansOwnFoundation.org.
We greatly appreciate your interest in the foundation."
In a statement sent to KCST members before the first broadcast of the program, Brinson, a 35-year public broadcasting veteran, defended his decision to protesting members that "Next Meal" was "a journalistic piece that explores the science behind genetic engineering while including multiple perspectives on the issue."

Is Next Meal objective journalism or an infomercial for the biotech industry?
Charles Mish, a retired journalism, English and film professor, looked up the Society of Professional Journalists "Code of Ethics.” Here's what he found in Section 4: Accuracy and Objectivity:
"Good faith with the public is the foundation of all worthy journalism.
"1. Truth is our ultimate goal.
"2. Objectivity in reporting the news... serves as the mark of an experienced professional. It is the standard of performance towards which we strive. We honor those who achieve it.
"3. There is no excuse for inaccuracies or lack of thoroughness."
According to Wikipedia, Journalist ethics and standards comprise principles of "truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability-- as these apply to the acquisition of newsworthy information and its subsequent dissemination to the public."
To answer the "journalistic" question, this survey was sent to journalists across the county to get their perspective regarding the controversy.
